More impact, the same mission: Simavi is joining the WaterAid family
For 100 years, Simavi has been committed to water, sanitation and equal opportunities for women and girls. From 22 March 2026 – World Water Day – Simavi will continue this work as a member of the WaterAid family, a global not-for-profit working to provide clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene for everyone. Simavi will therefore become WaterAid Netherlands.
The news was announced during Simavi's 100th anniversary celebrations at the Rijksmuseum on 13 November. Simavi director Dieneke van der Wijk: 'This is a tremendous step forward. By becoming part of the WaterAid family, we can achieve even more. Our goal remains the same: to work together to end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis – for everyone, everywhere.'
'By becoming part of the WaterAid family, we can achieve even more.'
Director Veerle Ver Loren van Themaat: ‘The global water crisis is getting worse year after year due to climate change, and women and girls in Africa and Asia feel this impact the hardest. As a development organisation, Simavi fights alongside these women for the right to water. But this crisis is too big for any single organisation to tackle alone.’
Van der Wijk: ‘As WaterAid Netherlands, we will build on Simavi’s strong foundation, with more than a century of experience in water, sanitation and equal opportunities for women and girls. Our focus on water, women and climate remains unchanged, but now with the power of a global network working in 22 countries.’

Ver Loren van Themaat: ‘Together with the WaterAid family, we can make an even greater impact. We call on everyone to work with us towards a world in which everyone has access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. Change starts with water.’
